Mehr Licht (1985)

Bild
The title of this work, which translates as ‘more light’, is taken from Goethe’s dying words. It belongs to a series of collages made between 1981 and 1986, which Julião Sarmento (* 1948) assembled from disparate painted and drawn fragments. Here he uses both invented imagery and photographs, many of which derive from blurred photographs he found in newspapers. Characteristically, Sarmento intends the main image to be ambivalent. ‘A man holding a woman’s neck can be anything’, he has said. ‘It can be a tender gesture. It can be a violent gesture.’
